End of 1st Grade

It seriously feels like I was JUST having MAJOR anxiety about sending Owen off to school. I was so scared for him to leave Martha's Daycare and go to a public school and a different daycare. Kindergarten was a breeze and I have to say that 1st grade was even better!

Owen is a very loyal, hard-working, caring, intelligent little boy.  The beginning of the school year was special because I was on maternity leave and able to bring him and pick him up from school everyday. It was awesome.

He learned so much this school year with the help from his amazing teacher Mrs. Perez. I’ll be honest…I was a little nervous about her at first . She seemed to be a straight to the point, no frilly fuss kinda teacher.  She doesn’t call her students, kids or students…she calls them “scholars”…and I love that!  The amount of time she put into each and every scholar is nothing short of inspirational! She ended up being the tough-love teacher that Owen needed.

The end of the school year was a busy time…for everyone.  But Owen had his last awards assembly and received a Super Citizen Award. Yes I want a child that is top in math and top reader and top sight word king but I’m blessed to have a child that is all of those things AND also just a GREAT kid as well.  I was very happy for him to get this award.

This year was a special one for Mrs. Perez…she was taking another job in our district at a different elementary school. She had been at Highland for 13 years and was now going to be teaching 2nd grade dual immersion (spanish/english program)  So not only was this particular class a good one…she was emotional to be leaving what she’s known for so long.

The last day of school she had in-class awards for her students…to acknowledge ALL the achievements. So many kids got so many awards…it was cute.  Owen got too many to keep count. BUT one that I was pretty proud of (being a PE teacher) was his 100 Mile Club…he ran 105 miles this year! Like 105 REAL miles! Thats pretty damn amazing!

Our room moms were amazing too and got Mrs. Perez for leaving Highland.  Everyone was in tears.IMG_8945

Mrs. Perez made this video for all us parents…pictures of the kids in class during all different activities throughout the year.  It was so cute to see stuff that went on that I wasn’t able to see.  As I watched the video she had the Rascal Flatts “My Wish” song in the background…I started BALLING my eyes out. I remember the day I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma…we were at the river. This song came on and I sang it to my then 3 month old Owen…and Erika tapped it without me knowing.  At that time in my life I was scared that I would never get to see Owen attend school…and here I am..1st grade down…and I’m here, healthy and so so lucky.

Emotions were just flooding my brain…and Owen just looked at me like I was a lunatic. Some day he will understand.  Every year it a milestone! Every year I get to see him achieve his goals is a year I consider myself blessed because I wasn’t always so sure it was going to happen.

First Grade…so much change.
