Nanny

When my mom is in Ireland she’s one happy lady! Yes shes sad and misses us BUT she gets to spend real quality time with her mother.  She enjoys taking care of her…giving her weekly pedicures, helping her pick clothes, taking her grocery shopping, to get her hair done, old-people social gatherings…Bernie loves it al! And to see the excitement from my mom when she got to share my  kids with her mother was fascinating.  My Nanny is an 85 year old widow…who loves life, loves her town, loves her family…would still be going to BINGO every week if her eyes allowed her too! I love this little woman…

And I loved getting our alone time with Nanny in too.  I’m not one for much one on one time with her…I hate that its awkward…I’m not good with small talk.  I wasn’t raised to sit around with older people and chit-chat. I wish I was. I wish I was able to sit and talk. I’m envious of my cousins who were raised so close to my grandparents and have a special bond with them!! So I was happy when she was able to just hang out with my kids…watch them build lego’s, listen to them chat about youtube and take selfies (yes Owen took a selfie with Nanny that I found on my phone when we got home) it was the best!  I love these times.  I don’t want my kids to be like me. I want them to be comfortable with their grandparents and great-grandparents!! Seeing Nanny interacting with my kids was heartwaming…and THIS is why we come to Ireland…and I’m going to soak it all up as long as I can.

And evenings down in Irishtown are my favorite! Listening to the stories told of the past make me feel good inside.

Owen took these pictures…more that I found later…and for some reason I TOTALLY love them. Even the one with our heads cut off…I love seeing the hutch with Nanny’s “treasures”.

One of my favorite nights this trip was when one random evening I landed into Irishtown with Maggie…and it was my mom, all my aunts and Nanny…all hanging out a few days before Xmas.

I knew I’m totally related to my grandmother when she said one evening “ice cream is the most lovely thing ever!”
Nanny…I couldn’t agree more!
