Owen played “t-ball” through our community youth sports back in April 2013. It was a good first step…but it was VERY VERY basic.
No gloves, no cleats, crazy helicopter parenting…it was the very lowest learning level. But it was probably good for him at that point in his life. He learned, he liked it (even though it was so boring it was hard to watch!) I was a little happy when that season was over! lol
Owen start doing gymnastics the last few months and loves it…but asked about T-Ball a few months ago. I’m not going to lie…deep down my heart skipped a beat…with joy! I starting playing little league when I was 4 years old and was the only girl on the team. It was the start of my very long 14 year career of being a ball-player. SO many great memories and friendships formed during those years and I only hoped my kids would want the same. Daddy never played little league…I know what your thinking…How is he American?? haha (I tease him alllll the time about it!)
The regular spring little league season was over but I thought the Fall Ball would be the perfect start for Owen. Not as long of a season and not as intense. We showed up today for our first practice…and it was a whole new ball game compared to that youth sports league! We had to get cleats, baseball pants, a baseball belt & socks today! Oh it was so fun. We had a mitt here at home (that I had to dig up out of the toy room!) but think we need a little helmet and bat next!!! This is some serious stuff (for a 5 year old!!)
When we arrived at the park I thought we were in the wrong place. All the moms were chatting like they knew each other, the kids were playing like they were best buddies…so I totally thought this couldn’t be OUR team…its the first practice?!?!?!?! BUT low and behold this WAS Owen’s team. All the boys played together during the regular season and just rolled over into this Fall Season with the addition of Owen! The intimidation I felt in the beginning quickly disappeared…everyone was very nice. The coaches were SO awesome with Owen and it seemed like the child liked it!!
I watched this practice and was so proud!!! He did SO god. Blended in with these boys that already played together for months. AND I have to say…he wasn't the worst on the team either! He picks things up quickly and it showed today!
In the rookie t-ball division the coaches pitch to the kids…they get 3 pitches. If they don’t make contact then they set up a tee for them. The kids get 3 swings at the tee…IF they STILL don’t make contact they are “out” and head back to the bench. Gotta teach them young that not everyone gets to run the bases. hahaha.
He went from bad form (legs too close together, hands not together on the bat)…to decent form with minimal coaching and actually hit THREE balls! You KNOW we will be working on his hitting, fielding and throwing in the Souza house this week!
From batting to fielding/throwing…I loved every minute of it.
Again…bad throwing technique that he improved within 30 minutes. And in case you are wondering…I didn’t say a word…I let the coaches do the coaching and just took some pictures!!
Fielding is hilarious straight up!
It was a great experience. Can’t wait for the first game to see these little boys in uniforms running around like crazy!
