….so after my post about Owen starting school a few weeks ago…I’m sure you all probably think I was a crying blubbering mess on his first day…and I’m proud to say I actually wasn’t.
But let me back up…Owen got to attend a Meet & Greet the Friday before he started school. We were BOTH super excited!
The Meet & Greet was crazy! We got to meet his teacher, drop off supplies she asked for, and they wanted to see their backpacks. He has WAY to many kids in his kinder class…BUT it was like a breath of fresh air meeting Mrs. Lumba! She was extremely nice and the crowd didn’t panic her one bit…guess 18 years of teaching experience does that to ya. Owen really liked her…but I could see on his face how nervous he was. So we explored the class a bit, saw all the cool stuff he was going to get to do and tried to ease his little mind.
So. The BIG day arrived. August 11th.
God Forbid Ella was left out of all the pictures. He let me take some of Owen BUT HAD to get her “cheese” in too! haha And I loved seeing Nana…she was probably more emotional than me. She told me the story of my first day of kinder…she walked around the school a few hundred times to kill time. lol Since she couldn’t stalk Owens school she decided to walk around Ontario Mills a few times and buy Ella some shoes! lol score.
We parked a ways away from school and walked it…he asked a million questions and was in AH of seeing all the kids in the playground.
We got there and he found his friend Eden…thank god someone he knows from Martha’s is going to be in his class AND going to his daycare…so he has someone familiar. They both are excited to see each other!!!
Mrs. Lumba called all the kids to the rug…and kinda gave us parents the hint to get on out! haha They came gave us hugs and kisses…said good byes and that was it. Owen’s ONLY concern was that Mrs. Lumba said a bell was going to go off…you know Owen…he doesn’t like bells/loud noises. So he was scared. I reassured him that its a nice soft bell and not a loud buzzer. I saw his nervousness and it made me tear up…so Mama threw on her shades indoors! haha. He had no clue. Few tears on the walk to the car and all was just fine! MUCH MUCH easier than I originally thought.
All day at work I thought about him. I actually pulled my phone out to text to check on him….OH YEAH….I don’t have the teachers digits to get little memos on him. I rushed out on my lunch to pick him up…LOVED seeing his little face.
He was a bit emotional…I could tell by the way he was talking to me. He was sad about a chocolate melting in his pocket. He told me “he almost cried a few times but he pushed it down”. Ohhhh my poor boy. I asked why he was sad and he said he just missed me. I explained to him that he’ll soon not miss me…just like how he didn’t miss me when he went to Marthas. He said he didn’t know what to do at recess or who to play with. He didn’t touch his snack or water…he seems a bit unadjusted. My poor little dude. But getting him home to Nana to tell us all about his day was great! I told Nana to get him to lay down after lunch…he needed his rest for gymnastics. He told her he wasn’t tired…and was OUT in minutes! haha. This kindergartener still needs his naps…don’t judge.
I was so nervous for him for day one BUT wasn’t as nervous as I was today for him…Day 2. Today was the first day he had to go to daycare before AND after school…I wasn’t there to bring him to his class or pick him up. But today went great…he loves his daycare because they let him play dodge ball! haha Talk about a weight off my shoulders…this transition has gone great!
So now it goes to afterschool routines. This is hard. Owen doesn’t seem to be a homework lover…We decided to go for an after school swimming session today…gotta beat that heat! Then it was like pulling teeth to get him to sit down and do some homework! In his defense he was EXHAUSTED. No consistent naps is something he’ll have to start getting his little body used to. But I’m thinking he’s going to be the kinda kid that has to get straight to homework. He’ll have had enough playtime at daycare and will need to refocus himself. haha I know this doesn’t get easier in time so I’m a llliiiittttllllleeee bit nervous.
ps. My little hunnie bunnie got a Gold Star today…he had a “super duper day”. He tried explaining to me about the Green Happy Face, Yellow Face when you make a mistake and then if you have to move your clip to the RED face you have to go talk to the boss of the school (hahaha Boss=Principal!…is that cute or what). But the GOLD was for kids that were really good kids. Go Owen! (Sorry this might be bragging…but I’m allowed to do that since its his first freaking week!)
We survived 2 days of Kindergarten. Ella survived her first day at Marthas without her brother there to help her out! She did great. Of course. Yosh and I survived our first 2 days teaching at the high school. I’m proud of the Souza fam.
Cheers to a Happy School Year.
