Some people love collaborating and conferencing…some people don’t. I love it. Seeing and meeting people that are strong advocates who love my profession. Those that are always thinking of fun new ways to do things in a PE classroom. My AMAZING principal said he’d send any of my department that wanted to go to the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) Conference in San Diego. Four of the seven department members took him up on that offer…and it was such a wonderful weekend!!!
We started by driving down to SD and getting some yummy pizza at one of Eric’s favorite places in Hillcrest. I found this little city/town within San Diego very interesting. East Coast Pizza was delicious! Hawaiian Chicken BBQ. yum!
After lunch we went and checked into the conference and started our first session…TECH STRONGER.
We learned about Seesaw, Gif creations and iMovie. Seesaw was a bust, GIF making was great…plan to create a bunch and link with with QR codes to show kids what activities they need to do and the iMovie was refresher for me…and plan on making a movie to Thank our principal.
I couldn’t get over how cute our hotel was!
And this weekend quickly turned into Work-Out Weekend! Eric and I work out with a few other co-workers everyday at lunch during the work week. It was a thursday and we were missing our lunch workout so we decided to run 20 flights of stairs (10 up & down…twice) and at each flight we did push-ups for the floor number we were on. It was rough. And then ended the work out with a .75mile run around the resort.
We got on the SD Trolley and headed to Old Town for dinner. Was fun since I have never done that before.
We had a great dinner…with really great conversation! I love learning new stuff while conferencing BUT I always love getting a chance to get to know my co-workers on a different level.
Day 2 of the conference started very early…with some Zumba!
Our next session was about the importance of Core Work…we learned nothing new…so we skipped out and learned some fun stuff about the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act)
Next “session” was breakfast! We walked…adding to the workouts to a place called Waffle Spot. The little diner was super cute..BUT they loved us to the Amigo Spot…boo! Food was good and we were ready to conquer the rest of the busy busy day!
While waiting for our next session we had some fun in the exhibit hall. We had a few ideas of things we wanted to look out for…fitnessgram equipment, lap counters, heart rate monitors, etc.
We tried the push-up counters, sqairs tiles, pacer run with the heart zone monitors, it was workout without even trying!
Ran out of the exhibit hall to attend the Polar Heart Rate Monitor Session. That was so fun. We did a full workout with their monitors. They told us all the high tech stuff these monitors to.
Working out and testing heart rate monitors was SO much more fun than I ever thought.
From Polar we went to DrumFit and tested the Adidas Zone for IHT Spirit.
I haven’t laughed that hard in a very long time. We were banging on the exercise balls, riding the balls, balancing on the balls, bouncing on the balls…oh it was funny. We had to try and balance with a group of people on the balls. We were laughing and balancing…and my co-worker stuck his finger in my sweaty armpit and I couldn’t stop laughing to tell him to get his hand out! hahaha It was funnier there than now when re-telling the story. We have video of all the fun…won’t post that here though! But the DrumFit is a system you purchase all the equipment and the “PE Netflicks”…they have new workouts all the time. It was fun…but not something I think would work with our students. Giving them sticks to swing around and bang…yeah I could only imagine where those students would stick those drum sticks haha
This heart rate monitor was our favorite. It showed the heart rate and then color of the level. Blue was below zone, yellow was in zone and red was over zone. We liked how visual it was.
Going from session to session we didn’t realize it was lunch time. One of my favorite parts of this conference was getting to spend time with my colleagues.
Our resort was so beautiful and getting a chance to workout ALL day was so amazing.
We “conferenced” ALL day. So it was nice to go back shower, freshen up and then hit the town for some grub!
We met up with some of our district health teachers for dinner. Poor Eric was the only dude with 6 women. He was a champ though and went along for the ride.
I was very well behaved…no bars, no dancing, barely any drinkin’! haha What the heck. It was fun too because we rode the trolley from hotel circle to Old Town the first night and Gaslamp Quarter the 2nd night…I don’t ever ride public transportation so it was an experience. BUT I’m not going to lie…I was a little nervous…some people are pretty sketchy!
Session planning for day 3…it was awesome that CAHPERED had an app and we were able to check session info all the time! So we were scheming on how our day was going to go for the last day!
Day 3 of conferencing…we were TIRED! haha Started our morning with a 3.5ish mile “fun run”…
I found this pic on the CAHPERD twitter…me and Eric are hiding in the back!
This resort was just so cute!
Even though we were so tired, there were a few sessions we were excited about! One big one was Women in Resistance Training. I would LOVE to start a girls weight lifting class…to be able to get girls to focus on the benefits for lifting for their bodies now and for when they are adults. This session got me pumped…will have to wait on getting an additional weight room before we think about creating a course like that here at our school though. But it also got me pumped for my OWN workouts! I used to not lift very heavy…I didn’t want to get “strong” I just wanted to look lean. Well, I learned that heavy lifting helps my bones and will give me the lean look if I do it correctly.
Some sessions weren’t great…but we usually still made our time valuable. VanderWeerd showed me how you can take notes on the ipad and insert pics and make them pretty and cool!!! And the stickers they gave us kept me entertained as well. I would put them on people and things when I thought it fit. My favorite one was “Teachable Nugget” hahaha
This conference did me well…yes I learned a lot BUT most importantly I feel like it recharged my teaching batteries. I came back feeling ready to take on this last semester but also gave us a boost to get those heart rate monitors, find ways to try and start fundraising for a class set.
Until next time CAHPERD!!
